Friendship encompasses unwavering love, support, and encouragement, particularly in challenging times. It means being a helpful presence, forgiving one another, speaking truth with love, and prioritizing each other’s interests.

The story of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-37 brings the theme of being a friend to life.

In this parable, Jesus responds to a religious expert’s question about how to inherit eternal life. The expert acknowledges that the law calls for loving God and one’s neighbor, but seeks clarification on who qualifies as a neighbor. Jesus narrates the tale of a man who, after being beaten by robbers, is ignored by a priest and a Levite but is compassionately helped by a Samaritan. The parable concludes with Jesus declaring that the true neighbor is the one who shows mercy, instructing the expert to “go and do likewise.

John 15:11-17 summarizes Jesus’s commands to his followers: to love one another as he has loved them, which is the greatest love possible, and to remain as friends by obeying him. He explains that this new status as a friend, not a servant, comes with the privilege of having the Father’s will revealed to them and with the promise that their prayers will be answered and their work will be fruitful.

Jesus Brings a Woman’s Son Back to Life (Luke 7:11-17)

Jesus and his followers went to a town called Nain. A big crowd was traveling with them. When Jesus came near the town gate, he saw some people carrying a dead body. It was the only son of a woman who was a widow. Walking with her were many other people from the town. When the Lord saw the woman, he felt very sorry for her and said, “Don’t cry.” He walked to the open coffin and touched it. The men who were carrying the coffin stopped. Jesus spoke to the dead son: “Young man, I tell you, gets up!” Then the boy sat up and began to talk and Jesus gave him back to his mother. Everyone was filled with fear. They began praising God and said, “A great prophet* is here with us!” and “God is taking care of his people.” This news about Jesus spread all over Judea and to all the other places around there.

The miracle shows that even in the midst of immense sorrow, we are not alone. The widow was surrounded by a crowd, and Jesus’s response to the situation brings hope and comfort to her and everyone around her. This lesson reminds us that God’s love and presence are always with us, even when we feel most alone.

Jesus Heals an Official’s Son (Jhn 4:46-54; Mt. 8:5 13; Lk. 7:1 10)

Jesus goes to visit Cana in Galilee again. Cana is where he had changed the water into wine. One of the king’s important officials lived in the city of Capernaum.* this man’s son was sick. The man heard that Jesus had come from Judea and was now in Galilee. So he went to Jesus and begged him to come to Capernaum and heal his son, who was almost dead. Jesus said to him, “You people must see miraculous signs* and wonders* before you will believe in me.” The king’s official said, “Sir, come before my little son dies.” Jesus answered, “Go. Your son will live.” The man believed what Jesus told him and went home. On the way home the man’s servants came and met him. They said, “Your son is well.” The man asked, “What time did my son begin to get well?” They answered, “It was about one o’clock yesterday when the fever left him.” The father knew that one o’clock was the same time that Jesus had said, “Your son will live.” So the man and everyone in his house believed in Jesus. That was the second miraculous sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee.

The healing emphasizes that true faith isn’t about seeing miracles, but about trusting in God’s word and promises even when they are not immediately evident.

Jesus Heals Many People (Matt 8:14-15; Mk. 1:29 34; Lk. 4:38 41)

Jesus went to Peter’s house. He saw that Peter’s mother-in-law was in bed with a high fever. He touched her hand, and the fever left her. Then she stood up and began to serve him.

This miracle encourages us to remember that Jesus is a healer and that we can come to him in times of sickness and need, knowing that he is able and willing to help us.
